Addition With Regrouping Review

So on those Oh. So. Busy. days we try not to introduce anything new or work on anything that takes tons of instruction, instead we review! I found some cute review ideas from Step into Second Grade and whipped this review up really fast.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!

Okay, maybe the title was a bit much, but I swear if I turn a lesson into something cute or delicious looking... lessons are a breeze. So, I've been turning everything into ice cream cones; double digit addition, double digit subtraction and working with blends. Who knows what I'll do next, but here are pics of what we've done so far:

Pop Rocks, a blog I LOVE and a Future Math Lesson/Craft

I recently stumbled onto a blog that has the cutest ideas, EVER!!! I mean cute inexpensive or FREE things that even I can recreate. One cute idea is to create a Valentine's area in your home....so here is my recreation:

Next:

I have mentioned teachers pay teachers before, but a brief recap: It is a site where teachers sell unit lessons and there are some CUTE! ones. I purchased one on Pop Rocks for like $4 and it included 5 or 6 separate lessons on POP ROCKS! The Prince had never had Pop Rocks before and I found a three pack for $1 at the Dollar Tree. This is one CrAzY pop rocks guy and the Prince loves him, hahahahaha! Ours is a bit different than the one in the lesson, you may like hers better...;?




Finally:

While the Prince was creating the pop rocks guy I thought I would get a jump on Monday's math lesson, so I decided to created double digit addition and subtraction ice cream cones... I must say I get tickled when I come up with my own ideas...:)!

So anywho...this is the addition one...I'll post the finished products next week after the Prince completes the problems and glues them together.

I'm off and running to drop my Prince off at PE and Art and then I will hit the grocery stores..later this evening is date night... Is it super crazy that we are thinking of going to the gym for date night???
Yes, it is.
I know.
But that is what we are thinking.

An Amazing Educational Freebie and Happy 2012 to ya!

HAPPY HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The First Grade Parade, a fabulous teaching blog I stalk...I mean follow, is offering a fantabulous FREEBIE! And when I say fantabulous, I really mean it. This freebie is 43 pages long and includes lessons/review on telling time, addition, greater, less or equal, abc order, antonyms, word creation and goals!! Cara (like how I pretend to know her and use her first name, HA!) seems so sweet from her blog posts, not to mention she is gorgeous. SO...a HUGE THANK YOU TO CARA!!

Popsicle Stick Math

At The Sharp Academy, we are always looking for interactive, fun, cost-efficient and educational ways to learn. Additionally, we are not big worksheet peeps; Here is one idea that we are currently using for addition and subtraction.

Materials

Large Popsicle Sticks (from Dollar Tree)
Black Sharpe
Cups/containers (I used the ones from our science kit, but you can get a pack of cups from the Dollar Tree)
Plastic Baggy (to store supplies)

I labeled the popsicle sticks with the addition and subtraction facts of the number I printed on the cups.

I decided to use tape, so I can easily change the number when we begin another set of numbers.

We typically have three aids to assist in our math computation, one is always mental math and in this picture we also had our abacus (Marshall's $9.99) and foam blocks (my newest find from the Dollar Tree!)

When the Prince enjoys lessons, I am a happy mommy/teacher!


****I should mention that for school supplies, I LOVE the Dollar Tree.

2 Digit Addition and Even/Odd Sort

Ever since the Prince began adding he wanted to do multiple digit addition, so of course I let him. It was like he learned single and multiple digit addition simultaneously and who was I to say that's not the correct way. He has not learned addition with re-grouping, as of yet. In addition, we have been working with even and odd numbers, so when I ran across the following worksheet it fit right into the Math journey we are currently on.

It probably seems backwards to most, but I started teaching the Prince addition via word problems. He is essentially a natural reader and has had a very advanced reading ability since he was young, in addition he loved to the read silly short stories I use to write about his family, so I capitalized on that and added numbers within the stories. I can't tell you how many math problems I wrote about how much candy his Pap used to eat or how many fish his Uncle Ronnie caught!

Lessons and activities for/with the Prince

This  afternoon I was in the kitchen and it suddenly hit me that I had all the items needed to make this cool homemade bird feeder that I saw on a newly found homeschooling blog - The Crafty Classroom

AND THEN....we remembered that we hadn't completed on of the Bill Nye science projects we learned about on Friday.
